This week in maths we have started looking at measurement. We have discussed heavier, lighter and equal to. Ask your child what 'hefting' means! We hefted common items around the classroom and discussed our findings. Before we actually lifted items, we made a prediction about what we thought might be heavier or lighter, based on our knowledge and experiences of that item. Mrs Pay bought in a set of scales and we saw how a set of scales represents our arms when we heft. We weighed a texta and a pencil which we thought would be similar in weight, but we knew the texta would be heavier because it is thicker, longer and has more inside it than a pencil does. We are very much looking forward to continuing our learning next week in class.
Isaac, Tahlia, Jayden, Abbey and Kodi examine the set of scales after Mrs Pay placed a texta and a pencil on each arm tray. Here the children are discussing why the texta is heavier than the pencil.
