Every Wednesday afternoon, 2F &2M combine to partner up and work through maths problem solver sheets. The students have a sheet of problems or mathematical based stories whereby students in pairs have to work as a team to solve. We then come together as a whole year level to go through the answers. The students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and we had some very well thought out answers offered. We are really looking forward to this activity being a weekly part of our Year 2 numeracy program.

This week, as we worked to conclude our unit of work on 2D shapes, we looked at tessellation patterns. Isaac identified the features of a tessellation on the smart board, students then completed unfinished tessellation patterns on coloured paper before taking a guess at how many tiles they would need to draw in. Then students had the opportunity to construct their own tessellating patterns on dot paper. As an extension activity, students were able to create a tessellation design from our 2D shape kit - take a look at the colourful, repeating patterns with no gaps.
Each time a student reaches a "**" mark on their blue home reader card, they are awarded with a certificate of achievement to take home. This is a very proud achievement for students as it is a marker that they are taking the time to read regularly at home. It is up to the students to notify me when they have reached a marker then the appropriate awards are given out in small groups. Well done on our smiling readers featured here in the below photos!
Our structured class presentation program has gotten off to a fantastic start. Children are choosing a topic from the list, carefully preparing their topic at home and delivering it to a peer audience. We have had some really engaging presentations so far, everything from charades, toys and special items from home, jokes, favourite books, photo talks, a "What Am I?" and even a pet from home!
Our week 5 winners are... Rubi for really applying herself during our 2D unit of work in maths, Kodi for super listening skills and focus while classmates were delivering presentations and Lacey for excellent teamwork with her partner, Mia (2F) in our combined class maths problem solvers activity. Congratualtions!
This week in maths we concluded our 'number' unit by practising estimation skills. The students learnt that 'estimation' means to guess. After completing a worksheet on guessing groups of items, they used maths materials in pairs to develop their skills. Here Elliot and Isaac are asking each other to estimate how many dice they are holding. It was challenging for students not to take time and count, but rather just take a guess as best they could. In 2M this week, we have commenced a new unit - 2D Shapes. Here Abbey works in a small group to brainstorm all she and her group members know about a given shape. Can you see their shape, where they have traced it and where they are writing everything they know about their shape in a poster to display? The students are using their brand new "Have a Go" booklets to help them with any tricky words to spell. Share time - the students then presented their brainstorm posters to the class in their groups and shared their learning. Oscar, Tahlia, Edwina and Naite confidently present information on their shape.
Practising our leaping skills in a pairs game - look how Bailey & Dylan can make long, consecutive leaps. Leap Rope - Go Seeahla! Leap Rope - Go Isla!
Take a look at our beautiful St. Valentines Day cards, lovingly made for parents, carers, grandparents, friends and even pets!! Sweet messages of love. Our Love Bugs! Special gifts ready to take home.
Congratulations to our weekly Merit Award winners! Jayden has shown some absolutely fantastic estimation skills while working in a small group this week, Edwina took extra special care of a friend who had fallen over at lunch time, showing great kindness and Rafael is simply zooming through his Synthetic Phonics levels in the morning sessions! Well done children!

A note from Miss Taylor..
Our class blog will be added to at the end of every week. Take a few minutes to check out the entries with your child and discuss what they, along with their classmates, have been learning in class over the previous week. I hope you enjoy this special account of your child's time in 2M. Positive and encouraging comments are warmly welcome! Archives
